We sell fabric by the Yard; a term called Linear Yard which is sometimes confused with Square Feet where the latter relates more to how carpet is sold. You would be amazed how many people ask us every day how we sell fabrics.
Square feet
Square Feet usually applies to things such as flooring where there will be a price per square Feet. You would then measure the length and width of the area to be tiled or carpeted and a price would be calculated for this. For example, if the price was $5 per square feet and the area measured 5ft x 10ft then this would equate to 50 square feet, therefore 5 x 50 = $250.
Linear Yard
Linear Yard is a lot simpler. This is basically length in a straight line. For this, you will have to check the width of the particular fabric roll as a wider width could mean you need a Yard less. Linear Yard is used because fabric is normally sewn together and is basically not often used as a flat surface.
Vinyl Crocodile Fabric
Fabrics come on rolls normally about 40 to 100 Yards this is normally determined by the type of fabric and its end use.
I.E. a standard vinyl roll would be around 40 to 60 Yards. This is because of the weight a 50 Yards roll of vinyl would weigh approx 60 Pounds as this is normally the safe manual handling limit.
A full roll of lining fabric is about 100 yards but still only weighs 60 pounds as the fabric is thinner and lighter in weight.
Common fabric widths are:
- 150cm (60″)
- 112cm (45″)
- 182cm (72″)
- 200cm (78″)
- 245cm (90″)
- 300cm (118 inches)
Very wide fabrics are difficult to move around, package, cut and work with as you’ll need a long table.
